Everything and the Kitchen Sink

Dear Readers,
We have been designing quite a few kitchens lately and a re consistently asked about sink preferences. So here’s what we think:
Stainless Steel: At first this appears low cost, but we prefer a more expensive lower gauge that is thicker- at least 18. These can pretty much work in any kitchen and are low maintenance. All shapes and sizes are available. Don’t let the scratches bother you.
Jean: My first apartment had a stainless steel sink. It always looked dirty to me….but I’m sure it was a low end one.
Richard: You can warm up the steel with a friendly countertop like marble or limestone.
Ceramic: These hardwearing sinks are usually fireclay (preferred) or kiln-dried porcelain. Some have wonderful new curves and shapes.
Richard: Even though these are sold as practically “everything” resistant- they are not.
Jean: As common as ceramic may be considered, it’s still great if you want a fun color. I love black ceramic sinks, but definitely beware of pans and cookie sheets scratching them. Fireclay can have a wonderful deep look, sort of like a bar of fine soap.
Copper: Love these but lots of maintenance….unless you don’t mind the natural discolorations and scratches.
Jean: These and brass sinks- great look, but I’d rather polish my silver.
Richard: I’d love to take the risk, but maybe on a second home.
Wood: Relatively new, usually a laminated teak composite sealed with epoxy resin, they actually are quiet and hold up well. A warmer feeling than ceramics.
Jean: What a fun look! And this can be handsome contrasting with white cabinets.
Richard: This is absolutely my next sink!
Then there’s the single, double or triple sink choice.
Richard: I prefer one large sink so I can decide the purpose of the moment.
Jean: My favorite sink style, regardless of materials, is the apron front or farmhouse- one large bowl with an exposed front panel. It sure would be easy on my back to stand and wash my little spaniel in it. Guess none of them are big enough for my greyhound…….
Richard: And keep in mind, most counter tops, except laminate, will allow an under mount sink. You’ll forever be grateful!
